Aim

To realise the dream of a Community Growing Garden led by those living with food and fuel poverty.

This project, in one of the poorest areas in the country, is bringing skills, generations and different communities together to create: Plots to Plates, A Living Wall, A Community Garden. A Growing to Eat project.  The local streets and our main street in the heart of the community, is currently awash with flower beds, containers, bug hotels.

The Bee Highway (via Bug Hotels and community built flower pots and beds) stretches from the park, through our streets and high street (Villette Road) and ends at the Community allotments. Next door to the allotments, our piece of land will become a Community Growing Garden: a place for all ages and communities to volunteer, gain skills, reduce social isolation.

The Community Growing Garden will have fruit and veg, a Living Wall, a herb garden, a potting shed and a 16 x 30ft poly tunnel. It will have Pollinating Plants patches, Bug Hotels (built by community members) and Biodiverse Wildlife Zones and a dedicated space for Teaching, Learning, Social, Exercise and Zen Zones. We have high numbers of families living with food and fuel poverty here. Our nature positive activity has resulted in strawberry planters in wellies, potatoes growing in containers, lettuces, peas and beans all growing in many back yards.

This funding will help maintain momentum and allow us to move forward further encouraging those offering their time to volunteer. They come from all generations from the community and partners such as The Wildlife Trust which has worked with us to create the plans and Recovery Connections – an organisation that supports those working through problematic substance use.
