Replacing gas with heat pumps to reach Net Zero & ensure a sustainable, warm welcome for our 4,000+ annual community visitors and services.

Who are we, and what is our project about?

All Saints is the Victorian parish church at the heart of Bedworth. We serve our community through extensive Youth and School work, family support, Connect Groups, a community dinner on Thursday and our Friday morning Café. As the Civic Church, we host Remembrance Day and other seasonal festivals and major community events. This is all alongside our service to families through weddings and funerals. 

We welcome all ages and backgrounds to be part of our vibrant and inclusive family, and we want to be able to do this sustainably, respecting both our people and our planet. 

Our Journey to Net Zero

Our building’s history as the warm heart of Bedworth is a story of energy transition. In 1900, we used coal for the Victorian central heating, which kept us warm but contributed to the awful pollution of the time. The soot and labour was eventually replaced by oil - cleaner to transport to the storage tank and somewhat less smoky to burn. Next, oil was replaced by gas, delivered direct to the building with much lower emissions to the High Street. Each modernisation has brought cleaner warmth inside and less pollution outside, and our move to electric heat pumps continues this 125-year journey.

In 2024, we installed solar panels, which supply 60% of our annual electricity. This campaign for the heat pumps is the final "big step" toward removing gas entirely and our dependance on fossil fuels. By ceasing to burn stuff and getting a high efficiency electric system, coupled with the contribution of our own solar, we're virtually to "Net Zero."

Going forward, we will be able to demonstrate and help de-mystify this technology of heat pumps, and help individuals and churches understand the role they can play for the country in ameliorating climate change and adapting to the challenges.

Preparing For Our Future

We're supporting our community to get ready for the future by:

• Stopping our use of gas: We’re acting now to stop burning fossil fuels, helping our town move toward a cleaner, healthier future. 
• Providing a warm refuge: As winters get more unpredictable, this system keeps All Saints a reliable, cosy space for everyone, all year round. 
• Showing what's possible: We want to show that green technology works in our historic church, helping local families see what’s possible in their own houses. 
• Sharing our learning: We are here to help other churches and individuals find out more about taking their own steps toward a greener future.

Why are we crowdfunding?

Replacing our central heating is a huge project, far beyond anything we can afford on our own. We need to sustainably and efficiently heat our busy modern offices and meeting areas, as well as sensitively retain the heritage and flexibility of our Sanctuary. We're keeping our unique Victorian radiators, and the bright and open feel of our central multi-use space.

We've applied for a number of grants, with significant help from the national Church of England, from Coventry Diocese, and others. This funding is the final push to get us over the line and make it possible. The heating design has been delivered by respected sustainability consultants Max Fordham, and will be effective, efficient and quiet. We aim to install it in summer 2026, finances and permissions allowing.

Because we are tackling climate change, every pound you donate will be doubled by the Aviva Community Fund (up to £250 per person). This means your £20 becomes £40 for the church at no extra cost to you!

How we’ll spend the money raised

We are raising funds for a specific, vital part of our transition. This Crowdfunder represents the "community contribution" towards our larger goal. The £10,000 we hope to get will be used for:

• Purchasing one of our two high-efficiency air-source units (approx. £11,000).

We will ensure this unit is sensitively integrated with our Victorian heating system.

What happens if we raise even more?

If we are fortunate enough to exceed our target, any additional funds will go towards installing secondary glazing in our main worship area. This will help us better retain the heat from our new system, reducing our energy bills and helping our community spaces stay cosy even in the depths of winter.
