Aim

Supporting Bolton families with free budgeting advice, financial education and practical pathways to a more secure future.

Who are we, and what is our project about?

Chris Movement CIC is a community interest company based in Bolton, dedicated to supporting vulnerable individuals and families facing poverty, social isolation, and financial hardship. We believe lasting change comes from empowering people with knowledge, dignity, and practical support rather than short-term fixes.

Our founder and CEO, Chris Akuffo Addo, has devoted his career to serving disadvantaged communities across Sweden, Italy, and the UK. With a professional background spanning IT, health and social care, and community development, Chris saw firsthand that true resilience starts with financial confidence.

Our Vision

We envision a world where every person, regardless of background, thrives in an inclusive, supportive environment free from poverty and inequality, united through respect, empathy, and shared opportunity.

Working alongside our dedicated volunteers and in partnership with Cangaf Accountants, we are launching Bolton Community Tax Clinic. This financial wellbeing project will deliver free budgeting workshops, one-to-one money guidance, and direct connections to trusted financial support services.

Many households across Bolton are currently drowning in the rising cost of living and debt. This project directly supports the Aviva Community Fund's Financial Wellbeing theme by helping residents maximize their income, improve savings habits, and reduce the crippling stress of financial uncertainty.

Why are we crowdfunding?

Across Bolton, too many families are living from one payday to the next without access to trusted advice. Financial hardship doesn't just affect bank accounts; it impacts mental health, relationships, and children's futures.

We are crowdfunding because financial wellbeing is about much more than money, it is about peace of mind. We need the community's help to scale this project quickly. By crowdfunding, we can remove the barriers to financial literacy and step in with practical education before financial difficulties spiral into long-term crises.

Right now, thousands of individuals and families across Bolton are losing vital household income to an unfair, invisible barrier: the complexity of the UK tax system. In Bolton, nearly half of our population (46%) lives in areas ranked among the top 20% most deprived nationally.

For low-income households, single parents, the elderly, and newly self-employed workers from marginalized or minority ethnic backgrounds, managing taxes isn't just confusing, it is a major source of extreme financial anxiety.

Every year, millions of pounds in unclaimed tax reliefs, marriage allowances, and working tax credits go completely untouched because people don't know they are eligible.

Worse still, many find themselves trapped on incorrect emergency tax codes or facing spiraling HMRC penalties simply because they cannot afford commercial accounting fees to fix an error. This creates a severe "poverty premium" where those with the least money are penalized the most.

While the cost-of-living crisis deepens, vulnerable residents and budding micro-businesses are left to navigate complex HMRC bureaucracy completely alone. Free legal and general advice services in Bolton are stretched to their absolute limits, leaving a critical gap for culturally accessible, dedicated, and expert tax guidance.

With your support, we will:

* Deliver free, accessible budgeting and money management workshops.

* Provide confidential, one-to-one financial wellbeing coaching.

* Help residents maximize their income through unclaimed benefits and grants.

* Signpost participants to specialist debt, employment, and welfare services.

Our goal is to empower hundreds of Bolton residents to take control of their finances and build stronger, more secure futures.
