Aim

After piloting our successful London model in Brighton, we want to set up our Brighton operations and support 50 refugees into work.

Breadwinners is a grassroots charity and not for profit social enterprise selling artisan bread and supporting young refugees and people seeking asylum in the UK into work. Sales of bread pay for the work of refugees at the markets, grants pay to run the programmes.

Our team has three experts by experience, one on our board and two as part of the core team.

Our theory of change’s long-term outcome is to improve refugees' wellbeing, and we do this through providing work. We involve the local community through our bread stalls, facing hundreds of customers every week, and recruiting and training volunteers to mentor our programmes participants in a 1 to 1 capacity. We support refugees to take an active role in their new community.

After running a pilot of 4 months in Brighton, we are looking to continue our successful model of supporting refugees and people seeking asylum into employment through bread market stalls in this city. We have supported 208 young refugees and people seeking asylum with their first work experience in the UK selling bread in UK,  8 of them in our recent Brighton Pilot. Our programme provides paid work, 1 to 1 mentoring support, and training on essential transferable skills so that refugees can progress into jobs.

Refugees have suffered a massive shock to their lives. There is an estimated 70% unemployment rate of refugees in the UK. Many people who arrive in the UK seeking asylum wait for years to receive their refugee status.

94% of our programme participants reported that their well-being has significantly improved due to our programmes. 90% of our Breadwinners Programme participants have gone onto further employment after our programme.
