Facilitate the opening of a Library of Things. Borrow don't buy, save money, help our environment, build communities & provide opportunity
The Library of Things is not a new concept, indeed its been around for decades, but not in our local area. We aim to create library of useful items such as power tools, garden equipment, camping equipment, small kitchen tools like liquidiser, juicer, bread makers etc that people can borrow rather than buy new either for the first time or to replace a broken one.
When we buy a new item, we take on responsibility for paying for it, maintaining and storing it. However, some items are rarely used. The average domestic power drill is used for approximatly 13 minutes, ladders once/twice per year, a lawnmower once per week for 40 weeks of the year, hedge trimmers even less. Yet many of us have these sitting, taking up space in our sheds, gardens or cupboard under the stairs!
We therefore want to encourage people to borrow items that have been donated to us. By doing so people will save money, space and help our environment by reducing the amount of materials (plastic and metal) used to manufacture the item, and the pollution created via the air miles accumulated distributing them to our shops and stores.
We are asking for your support to enable us to purchase a computer, printer/scanner, PAT testing kit, a tool kit, and the software needed to create an online library of items to be made available to the public. We will also need to train our volunteers to ensure all items are complete, safe and issued only to the adult who has reserved them. We also need to have an appropriate level of insurance in place to cover all items against breakage and theft, and the public against any risk of accident.
Examples of some of the “Things” we hope to stock for you to borrow:
*Power Washer
*Electric drill
*Jigsaw
*Sewing Machine
*Lawn mower
*Hedge trimmer
*Nutribullet
*Carpet washer
*Tent, and camping equipment
Thank you
