Aim

Many Sheffield families are struggling to buy food because of the crisis. People are going hungry. We provide families with good food.

People are going hungry

Since 30th March we have delivered 2,240 emergency food boxes. This week alone we delivered to 340 households, a total of over 700 people. The number is increasing as the hardship caused by the crisis grows, kids are at home for longer and people have lost their jobs.

The food we deliver is essential because people are literally on the breadline. But we want people to feel valued so as well as staples like bread and pasta, each box contains fruit and veg, treats and snacks for the kids and frozen meals produced by our chefs which go down a storm.

Using surplus food and reducing waste

In a time of crisis we cannot afford to waste an asset like food so each week we collect surplus food from the food supply chain. A lot of this food is near its end date and we need to be quick and creative in using it. So two of our chefs to cook the food into individual meal sizes which are frozen and sent out with the food boxes. People love these meals.

Surplus food goes a long way, but each week we need to buy in fruit and vegetables and the most popular staples so that we are sure people get what they need.  We are spending an average of £500 per week on fruit and veg. Raising £3,000 will keep keep a supply of food to take families through the school holidays.

We take referrals from GP surgeries, schools, Citizens Advice, and other voluntary sector organizations. The feedback we receive is that the boxes are a lifeline for many people.

To help raise funds we have developed a small enterprise to meet the nation's desire to bake. We are buying wholesale flour bags and repackaging into 2.5kg retail bags which we sell at cost plus donation. You can see more at https://breadforsheffield.wixsite.com/flour
