We want to give young people the opportunity to engage and take positive action on climate change in their local green spaces.

Who are we, and what is our project about?

Heath Hands is the community conservation charity that gets people active outdoors on environmental projects to benefit nature, and people's health and wellbeing on London’s wildest green space - Hampstead Heath. 

We believe that conserving green spaces plays a key role in mitigating the threats and challenges posed by climate change, particularly in urban areas, and want to get more young people involved in the issue through our Climate Champions project. 

We’ve a dedicated team of staff and hundreds of amazing volunteers of all ages involved in our nature conservation programmes. Over the last 25 years we’ve played a key role in conserving green spaces in North London, getting many thousands of people involved in environmental project and nature conservation.

Hampstead Heath Climate Champions will give opportunities for children to engage actively and take practical action on climate change and the protection of their local green spaces. The project will create opportunities for young people to take part in practical conservation through work experience programmes, and also provide visitors the chance to understand how climate change is affecting Hampstead Heath and what they can do to create a more resilient urban environment.

Why are we crowdfunding?

We seek funding for two related aspects of work: 

1. School work experience: 

We will launch work experience opportunities for local young people, introducing them to nature conservation and careers in the environmental sector, enabling participants to gain practical experience while actively taking part in work to address climate change on Hampstead Heath, increasing skills, knowledge and confidence. We get lots of requests for work experience, but currently lack the resource to host work experience weeks.

2. Learning resources and public engagement

We will develop free resources to engage visitors to Hampstead Heath on the subject of climate change in relation to nature conservation and green spaces and run climate engagement sessions for the local community, local schools and local youth clubs. 

How we’ll spend the money raised

The money raised will be spent on: 

- Staff time to plan and supervise the work experience sessions and activities

- Volunteer training and resource developement on climate change and green spaces

- Equipment and resources e.g. displays, handouts, monitoring equipment, tools
