Aim

Tiny spines, huge fight. SWCC Hedgehog Hospital gives injured & vulnerable hedgehogs a second chance to survive, recover & return home.

Who are we & what is our purpose, project, mission & vision?

Shepreth Wildlife Conservation Charity (SWCC) and its Hedgehog Hospital are dedicated to the protection, rehabilitation & conservation of wildlife around the world, with a particular focus on hedgehogs.

SWCC's mission is to promote the survival of hedgehogs through conservation efforts, education & advocacy. By engaging the local community through educational programmes, SWCC raises awareness not only about species in our back garden, but also the importance of wildlife conservation & the ecological significance of species across the globe. The charity works with other organisations to protect habitats critical for wildlife, ensuring long-term sustainability for future generations.

Specifically, the SWCC Hedgehog Hospital focuses on the rescue, treatment & rehabilitation of hedgehogs, a species facing significant threats from habitat loss, climate change & human activity. The hospital's mission is to provide expert medical care & a safe environment for injured & sick hedgehogs, ultimately aiming to release them back into the wild. SWCC also plays a crucial role in educating the public about the challenges hedgehogs face & the steps people can take to support their survival. Through research & collaboration, the Hedgehog Hospital contributes to broader conservation strategies aimed at protecting hedgehogs & their habitats.

SWCC is committed to wildlife conservation, ensuring vulnerable species receive the care they need & that the public is informed & engaged in the effort to protect our natural world.

SWCC exists to protect wildlife, flora & fauna through education, fundraising & direct animal care. Through its dedicated hedgehog hospital, SWCC rescues, rehabilitates & releases vulnerable native hedgehogs back into the wild, helping restore declining populations. Hedgehogs are vital to biodiversity because they naturally control insect & pest populations, support healthier soil ecosystems & indicate the health of connected green habitats. Protecting hedgehogs also protects the wider environments they depend on, including hedgerows, woodlands & urban green spaces that absorb carbon, support pollinators & improve ecosystem resilience. By safeguarding hedgehogs, SWCC helps maintain a healthier natural balance, strengthens environmental sustainability & supports climate resilience.

Why are we crowdfunding?

Every year, the hospital cares for 100s of sick, injured & orphaned hedgehogs, with veterinary care forming the backbone of its operations. A fund of £5,000 would be instrumental in covering essential veterinary costs, ensuring the hospital can continue its critical work.

How we’ll spend the money we raise...

Funds support vital veterinary care for hedgehogs at SWCC. This includes diagnostic testing & treatments like antibiotics, parasite control & rehydration to stabilise patients. It will cover urgent surgeries for injuries caused by accidents or predators, including anaesthesia & post-operative care. Ongoing preventative treatments such as deworming & mite control will protect hedgehogs during rehabilitation. Funding will also enable expert veterinary consultations for complex cases, ensuring tailored care. Finally, it will provide specialised nutrition, including recovery diets, milk for orphaned hoglets & supplements - giving every hedgehog the strongest chance of recovery & safe return to the wild.
