Aim

To transform an underused school space into a green outdoor learning area where children can grow food, eat lunch and be taught outside

Who are we, and what is our project about?

Our project will transform an underused outdoor area at Albert Pye Primary School into a greener, accessible outdoor learning, sensory and wellbeing space for our pupils and wider school community. We plan to create dedicated outdoor teaching and seating areas, provide shade and shelter, introduce sensory and wildlife-friendly planting, and improve the space so that it can be enjoyed throughout more of the year.

The project will help our school community prepare for and adapt to the impacts of our changing climate. Hotter summer temperatures increasingly make exposed outdoor areas difficult for children to use, so creating shaded spaces and introducing more planting will provide cooler, more comfortable areas for learning, play and wellbeing. Greener areas and appropriate planting will also help manage rainfall and surface water while providing valuable habitats for insects and other wildlife.

Alongside these physical improvements, the project will give children practical opportunities to learn about climate change, biodiversity and sustainability. Pupils will be able to take part in planting, caring for the area and observing nature, helping them understand how small actions can make their own community more resilient to a changing climate.

By combining climate adaptation with education, biodiversity and children's wellbeing, the project will create a lasting resource that benefits both current pupils and future generations.

Albert Pye and Ravensmere PTFA is a volunteer-led registered charity supporting children and families at our schools in Beccles.

We raise funds to provide additional resources, facilities and opportunities that enhance children's education, wellbeing and school experience.

Our latest project is to transform an underused outdoor area around our KS2 building into a Green Outdoor Learning, Growing and Wellbeing Area.

We want to create a space where children can get involved in growing fruit, vegetables and plants, learn about wildlife and biodiversity, and develop practical knowledge about sustainability and looking after our environment.

Our project fits the Climate Action theme by improving children's access to green space and providing hands-on education and skills for a more sustainable future. We want children to understand where food comes from, the importance of pollinators and biodiversity, how we can reduce waste and how small actions can help protect our environment.

Why are we crowdfunding?

We have a fantastic outdoor space with lots of potential, but currently it is underused and lacks the equipment and resources needed to make the most of it.

We're crowdfunding to start changing that.

Our initial £500 target will allow us to begin creating the growing and environmental-learning elements of the project. Children will be able to plant seeds, grow and harvest food, attract and support wildlife and learn about sustainability through practical activities rather than only in the classroom.

This is the first stage of a larger transformation. The PTFA is also fundraising and seeking grant support to develop the wider area into an inclusive outdoor learning and wellbeing space.

The improvements will be a lasting resource, benefiting children now and future generations of pupils.

How we'll spend the money raised

Every donation will go directly towards developing the new green outdoor learning area.

£150 – Raised growing beds and planters
£100 – Soil, compost and growing materials
£80 – Fruit, vegetable, herb and pollinator-friendly plants and seeds
£70 – Water-saving and watering equipment
£50 – Wildlife and biodiversity resources
£50 – Child-friendly gardening and outdoor learning equipment

Total initial target: £500

If we raise more than our initial target, additional funds will go towards expanding the growing areas and developing the wider outdoor learning and wellbeing space.

How you can help

There are three simple ways you can support us:

1. Make a donation
Every contribution, however large or small, will help us get closer to creating the new area. Early donations are particularly valuable as they help build momentum for our crowdfunding campaign.

2. Spread the word
Please share our project with friends, family, local businesses and the wider community. The more people who hear about the project, the more we can achieve for the children.

3. Get involved
We'd also love support from people who can volunteer their time, skills or expertise to help us develop the area. Whether you're a keen gardener, can help with practical work or simply want to lend a hand, we'd love to hear from you.

Together, we can turn an underused space into a green, engaging environment where children can grow, learn and connect with nature
