Support adults with a learning disability through befriending visits that encourage wellbeing, independence, and social inclusion.
Mencap is the leading learning disability charity in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. We work alongside people with a learning disability and their families to challenge prejudice, change laws, and support people to live happy, healthy, and fulfilling lives.
Through our Befriending Service, we match friendly, committed volunteers with adults with a learning disability who may experience loneliness or social isolation. Many of the people we support have limited social contact, and for some, their volunteer is the only person in their life who isn’t paid to spend time with them.
The People Involved
Our volunteers come from all walks of life and share one key quality: a genuine desire to connect. Volunteers are matched carefully based on shared interests and visit around six times a year to build a meaningful one-to-one relationship. You’ll be fully supported by a dedicated volunteer manager, with training, guidance, and expenses provided.
What This Project Aims to Achieve
This project aims to reduce loneliness, build confidence, and promote inclusion for adults with a learning disability by supporting them to enjoy simple, everyday activities in their local community. Whether it’s a cup of tea in a café, browsing charity shops, or going for a walk, these shared experiences help people feel valued, connected, and more confident in the world around them.
By volunteering, you’ll be helping someone enjoy life on their own terms — while building a rewarding connection that truly makes a difference.
