Aim

We want to support local people in Croydon to prepare for extreme weather, and access trusted information and support.

Who are we, and what is our project about?

Climate change is increasing the risk of extreme heat, flooding, power outages and other disruptions. The effects of this can be particularly challenging for people experiencing cultural barriers, poverty, disability, or social isolation within the community.

ARCC is a trusted community organisation in Croydon. We provide advice, practical support and opportunities that help residents connect and improve their quality of life. We will help residents prepare for extreme weather through culturally relevant information and community activities. We will create a network of community and faith centres where people can share their experience and help to shape local resilience and emergency planning.

ARCC will also strengthen its role as a year-round Community Resilience Hub, providing a cool space during heatwaves, a warm space in cold weather and a safe space during periods of disruption or heightened need.

Why are we crowdfunding?

Strong, connected communities are essential to preparing for and responding to extreme weather. Our community and faith networks already have trusted relationships with local residents, including those who may be harder to reach through traditional services.

Through crowdfunding, we want to give these communities the resources to take practical action now.

How we’ll spend the money raised

Funds raised will help us make ARCC a trusted Community Resilience Hub and extend our reach across Croydon. The funding will:

  • Bring people together – Resilience events will create spaces for residents to share experiences, understand local risks and develop practical solutions together. We will host at least 4 Resilience events and outreach throughout the year in collaboration with the Croydon Council resilience team and our local partners. Residents will learn practical steps to prepare for heatwaves, flooding, severe cold, power cuts and other emergency disruption. Residents can share their experiences, identify local risks and work through practical scenarios and solutions. We will also hold online webinars when needed to spread the message to the wider community.
  • Reach communities through trusted partners – We will work through ARCC’s established relationships with local faith centres and community organisations to distribute accessible information and reach residents who face language, digital or cultural barriers.
  • Build trusted local voices – We will identify and support at least 10 local resilience Champions from the community and faith organisations. Champions will receive practical information, briefing materials and ongoing support so they can share trusted messages and signpost residents to appropriate help.
  • Connect organisations and strengthen local action – A Resilience Network in partnership with Croydon Council’s resilience team will help organisations share knowledge, coordinate activity and shape plans around local community needs and strengths.
  • Turn information into action – Practical guidance will give communities clear, straightforward steps they can take to prepare for extreme weather and reduce its impacts.

Every contribution will help ensure that more Croydon residents have the knowledge, connections and support they need to prepare for and respond to extreme weather.
