Aviva Employee Giving provided £2,040 of match funding
We are raising money for our Skillsmatch programme which helps refugees gain financial independence by preparing to re-enter the workplace.
Who are we, and what is our project about?
The West End Refugee Service (WERS) works with the local community to welcome refugees to the North East of England. Providing support, advice and advocacy as well as material necessities WERS helps thousands of refugees a year as they begin life in the UK. WERS also offers social activities such as cooking groups and day trips, as well as physical activities and sports to help mental and physical health of those in need. We work closely with local schools, businesses and community groups to deliver community and fundraising activities including awareness raising sessions which we use to bust common myths about the asylum system and help prevent the spread of misinformation. Uniquely, WERS has a Skillsmatch programme, aimed at helping refugees gain experience through volunteering, CV writing workshops and short courses to help get back to work when they are allowed. Bringing the community together to enable two way integration, tackle misinformation and make the North East a welcoming place for everyone.
Why are we crowdfunding?
This funding will help us run our Skillsmatch programme. This programme prepares asylum seekers and refugees to gain financial independence through employment. Skillsmatch offers courses on skills such as CV building, job interview skills and entrepreneurship as well as financial help such as opening bank accounts and understanding benefits and education scholarships. Skillsmatch also matches up volunteers with local charities and businesses such as cafes, shops, engineering companies and health care settings to build up their experience and CV's. We work with many local partners to offer a wide range of opportunities.

How we’ll spend the money raised
This money will help with transportation and accessibility costs to courses and volunteering opportunities, provide supplies and refreshments and offer approved courses and certificates. The money will provide equal access for asylum seekers and refugees to gain qualifications, experiences and professional references giving them a fair chance at gaining employment.
