50 mile community running event highlighting challenges to the endangered Atlantic Salmon on the river Exe and supporting river restoration
We are Tidelines, a small Community Interest Company bringing together artists, scientists and the river community to explore critical issues concerning our Exe estuary and river together in innovative ways at a time of climate crisis. Our world is changing before our eyes. Salmon, an iconic national species, are now officially critically endangered in the UK.
Our vision through Salmon Run is to help revive the Exe river and bring Atlantic Salmon back from the edge of extinction.
Please donate! All donations will be doubled by Aviva up to £250 before April 26. We will use the money we raise to fund Salmon Run event staff and costs (medics, run director, performers, photographer) education, outreach, school and community visits (presentations, talks, publicity, printing, marketing) and tree-planting a
nd restoration events (materials, staff costs)
Salmon Run is a combination of an inclusive, fun, healthy sporting activity linking communities along the river with a clear focus on informing people about the challenges facing salmon and other species due to climate change. Our event brings communities together to highlight these challenges and supports river restoration action working with our partners Westcountry River Trust and Friends of the River Exe.
Creative and educational Salmon-related activities and information are encountered along the way at the start, at relay handover points, at ultra food stations and at the finishing point. A Salmon Run podcast, a new one each year, is made available to all runners at sign up.
Salmon Run is 2 runs; one day. 50 miles.
1. In the relay Samantha the salmon ‘baton’ (a hand embroidered stuffed salmon) comes out of the sea and is conveyed from one team to another in a chain of different teams to the spawning grounds on Exmoor.
Relay teams are diverse and include youth clubs, families, river or angling groups, groups of friends etc. 2. Ultra runners run the whole 50 miles each carrying a small stuffed salmon.
Before the day we take talks and presentations to schools and other groups, e.g scouts and running clubs. Afterwards Salmon Run volunteers work with partners to improve river habitats and undertake water monitoring and habitat surveys with Friends of the River Exe.
'I learnt that I can run, not just for myself, but also for my community, as we celebrate the natural world.' Salmon Run participant
