Individual or group mentoring of vulnerable, disadvantaged children and young people - helping them grow in confidence and resilience.
The Island is a charity in York providing islands of space and time for vulnerable children and young people; building confidence, self-esteem and unlocking potential through positive mentoring relationships and unique programmes.
The Island supports some of our most disadvantaged, vulnerable and isolated children and young people to realise their potential through mentoring relationships and activities.
Our vision is to support, guide and positively influence the lives of every single young person in York, regardless of their socio-economic circumstances or life experiences.
"I've seen things I shouldn't see and heard things a child should never hear. Thanks to The Island I'm no longer a prisoner; the chains have been broken; I can talk to my Mum now." (Quote from a young person at The Island)
One to One Mentoring
Our one to one mentoring programme provides a child or young person with one on onesupport from a trained volunteer mentor.
Through recreational activity, our volunteer mentors look to enhance their mentees confidence, self-esteem and resilience levels, so that they can take positive steps forward in their lives.
This is done through weekly sessions that take place within the community so that a positive learning relationship can be formed between the mentor and mentee.
The Island carefully selects, trains and supervises volunteer mentors who make a commitment to meet regularly over the course of a year. The volunteer mentors give their time freely but are provided with a small weekly budget to cover costs, travel and the different activities.
