Giving quality furniture a second life while helping families moving into independent living create stable, liveable homes.

Have you ever walked past a perfectly good table, wardrobe, or sofa left on the pavement waiting for collection and wondered why it was being thrown away?

Now imagine moving into your first home and realising how many everyday essentials you still need. The flat may be largely empty, the furniture mismatched or missing, and even basic items like bedding, kitchen equipment, or storage can feel out of reach. For many of the individuals and families we support, this is their reality.

Homes with Dignity was founded on a simple observation: having a roof over your head does not always mean having a home.

We support people moving into independent living after housing instability, eviction, temporary accommodation, or other periods of crisis. Many finally receive the keys to a property, only to discover that creating a home is far beyond their budget.

At the same time, thousands of perfectly usable household items are discarded every year.

Our Trash to Treasure project brings these two challenges together. We rescue unwanted furniture and household items, refurbish them where needed, and give them a second life in the homes of people who need them most.

A reused table becomes a place where children do homework. A refurbished bed becomes a comfortable place to sleep. A donated wardrobe means belongings are no longer stored in bags on the floor.

The project also supports financial wellbeing. The cost of furnishing a home can quickly run into hundreds or even thousands of pounds. By providing quality refurbished furniture and household essentials, we help people avoid unnecessary debt and keep more of their income available for rent, food, utilities, and other essential living costs. Alongside practical items, we provide guidance on reducing household costs, improving energy efficiency, accessing support schemes, lowering food and energy bills, and making small changes such as switching to LED lighting or reducing draughts.

Our vision is simple: no family should have to choose between debt and an empty home, and no usable furniture should go to waste while people are living without the basics needed to thrive.

We are also passionate about the environmental side of this work. It never sits right with us that one family can be struggling to furnish a home while perfectly usable furniture is being thrown away. Through Trash to Treasure, we rescue items that still have years of life left in them, carry out repairs where needed, and place them in homes where they will be valued and used. Families avoid the cost of buying new, quality items stay in circulation for longer, and less furniture ends up in landfill. We believe that creating sustainable homes starts with making better use of the resources that already exist in our communities.

How we'll spend the money raised

£2,000 – Essential household items including bedding, duvets, pillows, towels, curtains, lighting, kitchen starter packs, kettles, cookware, crockery, cutlery, and practical home essentials.

£1,500 – Furniture refurbishment and repair including replacement parts, paint, fixtures, hardware, cleaning materials, safety improvements, and tools needed to restore donated furniture.

£750 – Collection and delivery costs to collect donated items and deliver them to individuals and families in need.

£500 – Energy-saving support including LED lighting, draught-proofing materials, thermal bedding, energy-saving advice materials, and practical measures that help reduce household bills.

£500 – Crisis household basics including emergency clothing, school uniforms, hygiene items, baby essentials, cleaning products, and practical necessities for people arriving with very few belongings.

£250 – Volunteer equipment and safety including protective equipment, basic tools, storage materials, and health and safety supplies.

If we exceed our target

Additional funding will allow us to support more households, increase furniture rescue and refurbishment, expand our crisis essentials provision, improve storage and transport capacity, and provide additional energy-saving measures that help families reduce ongoing living costs while preventing more furniture from entering landfill.
