To serve 222,222 healthy junk food meals in 2022, made entirely from food destined for waste, through our network of community cafes.
TRJFP Central is a social enterprise founded in August 2017 by a group of friends who saw an opportunity to challenge the injustice of food waste, to create opportunities for vulnerable people in local communities. Launched with no funding, venue or equipment, we're still running four years later, saving approximately 120 tonnes of edible, safe, in-date food each year, and using it to stock a network of autonomous, community-led cafes and food hubs throughout Birmingham and the regional West Midlands. As of the 1st of December 2022, we've saved 336 tonnes of food from going to waste, and used it to serve 671,445 meals!
All of our services are provided on a 'Pay As You Feel' basis: customers pay for food with their time, cash, skills or imagination - including paying for lunch by reciting poetry to entertain other customers, getting involved in the kitchen to cook the meals, or picking flowers in the park to brighten up the cafe! Our volunteers believe in the concept of 'Dining in Dignity': food has social value, and the way we interact with it reflects how we engage in communities and wider society. At our cafes, everyone is treated with respect. When a customer enters one of our community cafes, they are greeted by a maître d' who welcomes them, and invites them to make menu choices for a table-waited three-course meal. Food is important, and so are the customers and communities we care about. Our volunteers work hard to reimagine the food system, to produce over 200,000 meals a year on a PAYF basis. We also provide catering services for community groups and events, to celebrate our amazing local communities in Birmingham!
